Distinction in Piano Diploma exam for Year 11 student

Congratulations to Elo in Year 11 (pictured at the piano in the school recital room) who recently received a Distinction in her ABRSM Piano Diploma exam.

Elo is currently a TGS GCSE Music student and is also a junior exhibitioner at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London on Saturdays. The Diploma exam is a practical exam which follows Grade 8 and recipients of the award can put the letters DipABRSM after their name as a qualification.

Her examiner wrote: There was an excellent communication of the recital, enhanced with a performance from memory and there was a clear and convincing interpretation of the different styles throughout the chosen repertoire.

Last term, Elo also received the trophy as the winner of the 2021 TGS House Music competition which for the first time in TGS history was held exclusively online.  The eldest of three sisters, Elo started the piano at the age of seven when her father bought a piano for the family home. She says she is attracted to the wide range of sounds and colours that are possible from playing the piano-it is like having a whole orchestra at her fingertips! When asked how often she practices she responded that she tries to practice for at least 45 minutes every day alongside her school studies (plus she learns the cello too!)

Her most enjoyable memory of performing live was from her Leaver's concert at the end of Year 8 at her old school before joining TGS at the start of Year 9. Her favourite pianist to listen to is Seong-Jin Cho (South Korea) who won the XVII International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015. (A piano based competition dedicated to the performance exclusively of the works of composer Frederick Chopin in his home country of Poland. It is highly regarded in the professional piano playing circuit and is held once every five years.)

Elo particularly enjoys Cho’s playing as it is so expressive and technically brilliant. Elo’s favourite piece to play herself at the moment is Glinka’s The Lark. We look forward to hearing more of your musical journey in the future Elo!
