Reflecting on the pandemic

Our congratulations to Ria in Year 8 who won the KS3/4 category of the Kent’s Big Writing Challenge.  Entrants were challenged to write 500 words on the theme ‘local heroes’.

As with many young people starting secondary school during the pandemic, Ria’s first year differed from the usual TGS experience with a significant proportion of her time spent learning from home.  In her writing Ria chose to reflect on Mrs Joyce’s role of keeping the school community ‘connected’ during this time, even when learning was happening remotely.

Ria has been invited to the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge in August for afternoon tea and to receive her award.  Well done Ria!

I was both surprised and honoured that Ria chose to write about my role during the pandemic. Maintaining the sense of TGS community during this time was challenging and very much a team effort.  I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the TGS staff for their dedication and determination, especially in guiding our GCSE and IB Diploma students, and the students for their ‘can do’ attitude and adaptability.

Mrs Joyce, Head Teacher

I had some free time during the holidays, and this opportunity came up, it really encouraged me to do the best I could. I am incredibly lucky to have won. I hope to write more in the future.
