Professional writers share their expertise with Year 11 students

We were delighted to welcome a copywriter, university Journalism lecturer, press journalist, PR content writer, BBC communications writer author and broadcaster, environment law specialist and senior editor to School.  Our sincere thanks to these volunteers from our wider school community who shared their knowledge and expertise with students during a series of workshops.

Mrs Claxton, Joint Subject Leader English, commented “The English Department is extremely grateful to the visitors who so generously gave their time and shared their expertise with our Year 11 students this term and last.  Teachers were struck by the way they engaged students in the challenge of article writing, giving them invaluable advice about all aspects of the writing process, from planning right through to proofreading.  Through these sessions, students were encouraged to think more deeply about tailoring their writing effectively for readers, which will be useful in both their work now and their lives beyond the classroom.  Suggestions for how to respond quickly to the prompts under pressure, the importance of credible statistics and hooking the reader by moving from a general concept to a more personal perspective were found especially helpful”.

Students shared their feedback:

It was really interesting getting a chance to see the real world applications of the work we do in school.

Eye – opening!

It was a very valuable experience.

It was very useful; I have got some good ideas to help me in the final exams.
