CAS Story: Coaching taekwondo

Dana has been using her taekwondo skills to coach 4-7 year old children as part of the Creativity, Activity, Service element of her IB Diploma.  She explains more:

Recently, we have been teaching the students to do a bicycle motion kick, encouraging them to focus on controlling the power and momentum they use while doing the kick, which is very important for taekwondo (as one of its main tenants is self control).

This month we have a club competition coming up; therefore in the run up to it, we focused on training and getting the students ready for a more competitive environment. For both classes there was a lot of focus put on sparring, especially movement and using a variety of techniques. I also prioritised teaching the younger white belts. At the end of each session this month we also got the younger class to attempt flying side kicks.
