CAS Story: Conserving the biodiversity of the South Downs National Park

For the CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) element of the IB Diploma, Abby has been volunteering for Youth Action on a project in the South Downs National Park in which 16-25-year-olds volunteer to help out with an activity of current urgency that directly helps conserve the biodiversity of the local area.

Abby, Year 12 explains more:

The aim of the project is to engage in nature and work as a team to help improve the aesthetic natural beauty and wildlife in the area.

On one of the project days we aimed to implement fencing around the area of vegetative shingle (a rare and protected habitat) on the edge of the beach, in order to allow important species of birds (specifically the ringed plover) an area to breed and live uninterrupted by human activity. This is especially important as the amount of people visiting this beach has increased dramatically over time.

Abby continues to volunteer working in this project.
