Drama

The Drama Department offers a wide range of lunchtime and after-school opportunities available throughout the week. These include the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Musical Theatre Club, Key Stage 3 Drama clubs, dance and K-pop dance groups. In addition, rehearsals take place daily, supporting both curriculum work and the extensive programme of performances and productions.

In alternate years, when a whole-school musical is not staged, we participate in the National Theatre Connections Festival, as the TGS Youth Theatre Company. The festival is a prestigious and long-established national programme. This involves students rehearsing and performing a commissioned play, culminating in a “home” performance in the Mitchener Hall, supported by a mentor director from the National Theatre. TGS Youth Theatre Company then progress to perform at the Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells as part of the regional festival.

Facilities

At TGS, we benefit from two dedicated Drama studios, which can be combined via a retractable partition to create a large, flexible performance space. This studio is equipped with a professional lighting rig and sound system and is regularly used for examination performances alongside the Mitchener Hall.

The Mitchener Hall itself is a well-resourced venue, featuring an extensive lighting rig and high-quality speaker system. It serves as the primary space for both school productions and assessed performance work. We stage a large-scale school musical every other year, supported by a live band comprising both students and peripatetic staff. These productions are ambitious in scope and often feature two full casts, with students typically performing in at least eight performances during production week.
