Windrush Day 2026

TGS celebrated Windrush Day this year with a number of different activities.

On 3 July we welcomed Ronald Nelson and his daughter Tatum Nelson Harris who came to talk to many students in Years 8 and 9 about their experiences of living in Britain. Mr Nelson (the grandfather of one of our Year 9 students) came to Britain as part of the Windrush Generation in 1965 and he talked candidly and eloquently about his experiences.

He and his daughter were interviewed by members of our student Diversity and Inclusion Alliance (DIA) and also took a large number of questions from the floor. The session was invaluable for the students, hearing firsthand about the challenges faced by this generation, and the rich contribution they have made to British society.

In addition, on 10 July, a range of students were fortunate to talk via Teams to Liberty Melly, Head of Learning at the Migration Museum who discussed with them the establishment of the Museum and the bigger questions around migration.
Alongside these talks the DIA ran assemblies covering the history and legacy of the Windrush generation as well as form time activities about what migration, identity and belonging means.
