Adventure through the pages

Students from across the school enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to attend the annual PageTurners Gala. The event celebrated the joy of reading and the many adventures that books make possible from the comfort of our own rooms. Four visiting authors joined more than two hundred students from Kent and East Sussex, along with a large number of librarians and staff, for a very bookish evening filled with energy and enthusiasm.

Students were able to meet all the authors, choose a free book to take home and collect signatures on specially produced, commemorative bookmarks. The atmosphere throughout the evening was warm and lively, with clear evidence of strong engagement at a time when national reports suggest that reading for pleasure is facing challenges. This certainly was not the case for these students.

We extend our thanks to Weald of Kent School and their librarians for hosting such an excellent event. We also send our warm congratulations to Megan Hopkins, whose novel Starminster was announced as the winner of the twentieth PageTurners Award.

Our membership of PageTurners is supported through School Fund. We are sincerely grateful for the contributions made by families which help us to maintain a thriving community of readers at TGS, supported by a well stocked library and a professional librarian. These contributions make events of this nature possible and ensure that students continue to benefit from a wide range of resources and support.

Visiting authors commented:

Thank you so much again - a genuine highlight of my entire life.

Megan Hopkins

Thank you so much for an absolutely wonderful evening yesterday. It is probably the best award that I’ve been to particularly in terms of the students’ input and enthusiasm for reading. (shh…)
