Year 13 student's essay wins her the opportunity to visit CERN in Geneva

She explains more: "Last August, I had the incredible opportunity to visit CERN in Geneva, Switzerland after entering a competition in December 2024. Having written my essay on the nature of dark matter and dark energy, I was super excited to learn more about it and the standard model through their five-day Particle School, alongside other physics-enthused individuals.

Alongside the wonderful weather and the beautiful city, I would say that my favourite part of the visit were the guided tours, which gave me insight into how high calibre research facilities like theirs operate- the sheer scale of some of the experiments was astounding! Additionally, the combined teaching and touring ultimately inspired the investigation into neutrinoless double beta decay during the final project, where we were tasked in groups to design a detector".

This incredible opportunity was definitely one of the highlights of my summer, and I would highly recommend it, especially for those with a keen interest in particle physics!

Well done to this student whose superb writing skills won her a place on this inspirational visit to CERN. It really does sound like it was a great opportunity with lots of similarly enthusiastic students. Well done!
