The number of students in our Year 7 cohort who are eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant has trebled over the last seven years, illustrating Tonbridge Grammar School’s commitment to widening access to selective education.

This equates to 10% of our current Year 7 pupils and 4.5% of the entire school, reflecting the sustained impact of our Pupil Premium Strategy.

What makes our approach unique is that, as well as support in Years 7-11 via our Pupil Premium Promise, support is extended to pupils in Years 4 and 5 and their parents as they prepare for the Kent Test.  This is via our Horizons Programme, central to which is The Right Tuition Company’s generous provision of free 11+ tuition to 40 pupils annually.

Our pledge is continued into the Sixth Form, via our Sixth Form Promise thanks to the Debney Endowment Fund and the Coen Family.  It even continues when a student enters university or an apprenticeship with a grant towards university or apprenticeship set-up.

A parent comments on the impact of this support to her family:

My daughter is in receipt of Pupil Premium and is also a young carer to a sibling who has additional needs.  The peace of mind it gives me, knowing that she has the opportunity to have a creative outlet that supports her emotional regulation, is genuinely difficult to articulate. Sincerely, thank you for giving her this opportunity. It means more to us than I can easily put into words.

Mr Fitt, Co-Head Teacher comments:

Our approach to Pupil Premium is about far more than financial assistance, equating to up to 10 years of support for each child. Through Horizons, our Pupil Premium Promise and our Sixth Form Promise, we provide opportunities and enriching experiences, academic support when it is needed, and guidance for parents and families. Our aim is to remove barriers at every stage, ensuring that a student’s circumstances never limit their opportunity or ambition.

Arthur Ponsonby Founder and Director of The Right Tuition Company (RTC) adds:

Over the past eight years, RTC has been immensely proud to collaborate with Tonbridge Grammar School in delivering the Horizons Programme. The programme has grown in recent years and has become a hugely worthwhile and effective initiative in driving social mobility. The programme speaks to the values our company share with TGS around the implicit need to extend opportunity to all corners of the local community regarding entrance to grammar school. We believe the Horizons Programme to be a fantastic example of the public and private sectors of education working together to achieve genuine, tangible change for the good. It is heartwarming to see the impact it is making and the education-related opportunities it is unleashing.

Each year there are 15  Pupil Premium places available at TGS for local Kent students whose scores meet the grammar school threshold set by Kent, but whose score falls below the automatic cut-off for entry to TGS.  Read our Admissions Policy for more details.
