Congratulations to two Year 11 students who have become Arkwright Scholars

Congratulations to these Year 11 students on their impressive and successful efforts to both become Arkwright Scholars.

This is a prestigious national award to encourage and support students in their next two years, as Sixth Formers, to pursue engineering and technical careers.  As part of the rigorous and very competitive selection process, they have had to fill in an extensive application form, design their own project, sit an exam and have an interview.

This is a superb achievement; there are only approximately 350 successful students per year. They were advised and mentored by Lily in Y12 who is a current Arkwright Scholar.

The next stage is to see which company they are placed with to mentor them.

They explain more about their projects:

My project centred on designing a device to prevent people burning their fingers when extracting toast from the toaster.  The thing I’ve enjoyed most so far was meeting my interviewers.  They were really supportive, showing such an interest in my future plans and providing me with lots of tips.  I'm particularly interested in biochemical engineering and the use of algae as a biofuel.

My project centred on designing a gesture recognition system to make technology more accessible for all.  This ties in with my interest in becoming a biomedical engineer working in the field of prosthetics. We were both really grateful to the TGS Year 12 Arkwright Scholar, Lily, for supporting us in the process.
