Archive Club undertake independent research using School Archive and create posters celebrating the history of TGS

Since the 120th anniversary year last year, there has been an Archive Club running at lunchtimes. In this students from Y7 - Y13 have been able to enter the school's archive (which contains an amazing treasure trove of documents, photos, books and artefacts from the last 100 years of TGS history) look around and learn about the history of the school - just like professional historians learn about the past.

Last year the Archive Club created the lovely display that was in the main foyer for several months celebrating the different eras of the school. This year the project has been to create a series of posters for the Deputy Heads' Meeting Room. These have been curated and designed by the students and will be printed and framed to celebrate some of the wonderful stories from TGS students over the decades. Posters relate to a wide variety of areas of school history including famous alumni, the history of house names, artwork over the years and personal stories.

"I felt really excited about looking through the TGS School Archives because I feel really fascinated about looking through history and finding out about people who lived in the past whether that would be general history or the school’s history, it all fascinates me. I looked through the archive and found lots of drawings and paintings by students were included in the yearly school magazine which were published for many years from the 1930’s to 2000’s. I then picked my favourite from each decade so in the end I had student paintings from the 1930’s all the way up to the 2000’s. I also completed a poster about what the TGS houses were called back in the early 20th century and decided that it would be interesting to have them on a poster as well. I felt very happy to be contributing to the school’s history and uncovering the past for other people to learn about, especially as I also learnt things along the way too".

"Over the past few months, I have been working in the archives, to create posters about TGS’s alumni. To experience being a real archivist and looking through the school’s historical records was an honour. I have learnt so much and enjoyed every step of immortalising history. It is a huge privilege to have my work displayed in school, and I am humbled that I was a part in the extraordinary journey".

"It’s been a real pleasure to introduce the students to what it’s like to be a real historian and I’m proud that their credits as archivists will now go down as part of the history of the school".
