TGS National medalists

On Saturday 2nd May the Elite Gymnastic Squad from Tonbridge Grammar School represented the South East Region at the British Schools Acrobatic National Finals at Fenton Manor, Stoke. Tonbridge Grammar had dominated at regional level qualifying for U14 and U19 pairs, as well as U14 and U19 groups. The team were led by volunteer coach Mrs Cattoor, and special thanks must go to her for her continued hard work and commitment.

The pairs competed during the morning and came up against a lot of strong competition. Both pairs performed well and the final scores showed that we were strong contenders. The U14 pair (Annabelle Cynk and Olivia Grayland) missed out on a medal position by just 0.2 points which was extremely close, and the U19 pair (Emily Cynk and Jasmine Wynter) missed out on a medal by 0.5 points.

The gymnasts then had a break for lunch, and plenty of time to prepare for their group routines. We had a long wait to compete– however once the girls were on the floor they performed better than they ever have done before! They were faultless routines – and we were hopeful for medals as presentations began. We were not disappointed. The U14 team finished in bronze medal position, and the U19 team came second! An excellent result and a very high achievement for the TGS squad!

After such as excellent result on Saturday the gymnasts returned to Fenton Manor on Sunday 3rd May to compete in the British Schools Floor and Vault National Finals. All five gymnasts performed two vaults each, followed by an individual floor routine. The girls showed great strength and agility when vaulting and were awarded some excellent scores. In the floor routines the girls also performed to a high level, and thanks must go to Charlie Cattoor for her excellent choreography of the routines. After all teams had competed, presentations took place and the team from TGS were awarded bronze medals! A fantastic end to a very successful weekend!

Well done to all students involved in the Elite Gymnastics Squad – you have all worked tirelessly since September to achieve all of this! And finally a special thanks to all of the parents that have supported the students throughout the weekend!
