Learning about studying Spanish and Portugese at university

Y11 & 12 linguists enjoyed a visit from Christine Mathias, Senior Lecturer in Latin American History and Toby Green, Senior Lecturer and Admissions Tutor at King’s College London, who gave them an insight into studying Spanish and Portuguese at university.

Their visit forms part of a series of sessions open to both Y11 and Y12 that provides insight into studying languages at university.  It includes visits from university lecturers, school Alumni and staff who have completed language degrees at university as well as practical advice on how to choose a course.

The series covers not only the syllabus and joint degrees, but the wider experience of pursuing languages at university and the opportunities provided by studying abroad.

Mrs Lawrence, Languages Leader at TGS comments “This much anticipated visit forms part our commitment to supporting our students in their enjoyment of learning languages throughout their time with us and beyond the Sixth Form.  After a successful visit by Dr Siobhan McIllvaney, from the French Department at KCL, we felt the need to focus on Spanish and introduce Portuguese to our many dual linguists.”

It’s definitely given me more confidence to do languages at university and encouraged me to apply to King’s, something I’ve been thinking about but not had the confidence to commit to.

The presentations were incredibly informative and engaging, especially as they were partly delivered in Spanish. It gave us a fantastic insight into all the modules available at Kings from passionate lecturers who are genuine linguists.
