U13 County Netball Tournament – Monday 19 March 2018
With the ‘Beast from the East’ preventing the originally scheduled tournament taking place, it was with some amusement that the revised date once again saw the snow and ice falling in the 2 days beforehand, resulting in 4 of the 8 courts at Rainham School being unplayable. The tournament organisers did a fantastic job in rejigging the schedule of play, with a delayed start and reduced matches down to 4 minutes each way which, of course, meant little room for errors.
It was bitterly cold but the girls went out prepared with skins and hoodies on to brave the icy conditions taking on Weald of Kent in their first match, which they won 4-0. A substantial 15-0 victory over Strood after an hour’s break was then followed by 2 more wins against Kings Rochester (7-3) and St Dunstan’s (2-1). At this point in the day it became apparent that our next match, against Colfe’s, was crucial and would end up as the decider in the group. We battled hard but a number of unforced errors throughout the court saw us coming away with a 4-4 draw. Looking at the table we knew we needed to score as many goals as possible and concede as few as possible in our remaining 2 matches, as Colfe’s had a stronger goal average after 5 matches played.
A wonderful 8-1 victory over Sydenham High with some controlled and determined netball put us back in the driving seat. So, it was to come down to the final match. We beat Invicta 4-0 but unfortunately, we were a few goals away from securing the one semi-final place up for grabs. Colfe’s qualified as top of our group with the same number of points but a slightly better goal average.
“On Monday 19th March, the U13 netball team took part in the Kent Schools County Tournament at Rainham School. Despite the freezing temperatures and snow on the ground, we made it to the courts on time. Our first game was against Weald of Kent, which we won comfortably 7-3. We then went on to win our next few matches within our pool, playing well, improving our passing and spacing throughout and working well as a team. Our last group match was versus Colfe’s which we drew 2-2. This left us equal first in the pool with Colfe’s but unfortunately we narrowly missed out on going through to the next round on goal difference. We played really well together as a team and constantly strived to improve. Overall, it was a successful day out. A great big thank you to Mrs Cross and Miss Redding for making the matches possible and for helping coach and develop our team” Eloise – U13 Captain
Netball Coach Mrs J Cross commented: “I want to thank the girls for trying their hardest to secure that semi-final place. They all played some really strong netball and played as a team. Their team spirit was wonderful and they moaned little about the freezing cold temperatures and just got on with it. Given the position we were in last year as U12s when we came away from the County Tournament without a victory, the girls have shown a huge improvement this year with 6 wins and a draw from the day. Not a lost match in sight!! Well done ladies. If you continue with the improvements you have made this year then next year’s U14 competition is looking very encouraging. Keep up your netball through the summer and come back with a fighting spirit to go one further in 2018-2019!”
