TGS Motet Choir took part in their 9th national final on Friday 17th March 2017 at the Royal Festival Hall in London, against a senior choir section that included 7 BBC Songs of Praise and/or Barnardo's winners and runners up and included 5 girls' choirs!
Their new a cappella song ‘I will be with you’ by Sarah Quartel received it's UK premiere, and Motet ended with a trademark gospel song 'The Storm is passing over' by Charles Tindley. In a keenly contested senior section, the highest quality singing ever, ‘Cantabile’ from Hereford Cathedral School won. Motet weren't placed but certainly held their own in a field of fine Independent School Chapel and specialist choirs – we were the only state school in our section.
Alumni and former Motet Choir members Amelia Lampitt and Daphe Xanakis came to support the choir in the afternoon. Parents who attended the evening gala concert thought the choir singing was “Amazing!”
Anna (Year 12) said “There was a very communal atmosphere on stage and I felt very supported by the choir.”
Katie (Year 12) commented “Barnardo’s is such a lovely event every year because we get to support other young singers and it's nice to see the variety change!”
Megan (Year 12) was delighted “performing on stage at a prestigious event like Barnardo’s National Choral Competition really puts all the hard work we do into perspective and it's a really rewarding experience.”
