Proud Golden moment for Tonbridge Grammar School students at the Palace
Wednesday 28th November was a very proud moment for seven former Tonbridge Grammar School students. Lydia, Charlotte, Joy, Catlin, Mairi, Laura and Rebecca were all presented with their Gold Duke of Edinburgh's award certificates by HRH Prince Edward, The Duke of Wessex. The award is a culmination of 2 years dedication to their own personal development where they challenged themselves in many disciplines alongside their very busy academic schedule. Most students start with the Bronze Award in Year 10 which helps to build the resilience and confidence of every student so that they have the emotional literacy to make healthy life choices, flourish and be happy.
Taking part in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award with Tonbridge Gold was a really rewarding experience. Completing their expeditions in the Peak and Lake Districts was a huge challenge for the girls, while the Skill, Physical and Volunteering aspects of the Award complemented their IB studies perfectly. For the residential component, activities within the group varied from working on the Brownsea Island nature reserve to enjoying a cooking course in the Alps.
"The Gold DofE presentation at St James' Palace was a lovely way to celebrate our award and catch up with the team. Having a chat with Prince Edward was the highlight of the day for sure. DofE didn't seem like a massive deal at the time we were doing it, but receiving the awards and hearing about what other students got up to put our experiences into context. We came away with a better sense of what DofE as an organisation stands for, which made us appreciate having completed our Gold Award all the more." Lydia
"Although DofE had some challenging moments, the experience as a whole was so rewarding and something I will always be proud of achieving. There were definitely some high and low moments, including the occasional tears, but to be able to go to St James's Palace to receive the award was such an amazing opportunity and one that I will never forget. It was a fantastic end to on overall amazing experience." Mairi
"Receiving our Gold Duke of Edinburgh's award at St James' Palace made all of the hard work so worthwhile. It was a lovely day from start to finish and the beautiful setting made it so exciting. To have such a big group of us representing TGS in front of HRH Prince Edward was an honour. It was a day that none of us will ever forget, and a great way to celebrate all of the effort we put into achieving our award. We have lots of people to thank, but especially Tonbridge Gold for getting us through our expeditions, and Mr Sullivan for supporting us all the way." Rebecca
