On Sunday 24th January the U14 and U16 netball teams from Tonbridge Grammar School competed at the School’s London and South East Regional Netball Finals. This is the second year running that two age groups have qualified for the Regional Finals in the same year! Two teams from each county go through to the regional finals. In addition, this year, the achievement was even greater as both teams qualified as County champions.
Both teams played against the 7 other top teams in their age group from London and the South East, who had qualified from the four regional county tournaments.
From the experience of some of the players who competed last year, we knew that the standard of netball was extremely high throughout the day, and that both our teams would need to perform at their best to have a chance of finishing in the top two teams in their age group to win a place at the National Final.
The Under 14 netball team started tentatively in the first match but settled into a steady game in 2nd half. They made a fabulous come back from 3 goals down against Sevenoaks School, in a great match that proved to be a crucial draw at 10-10. The team grew in confidence and self-belief as day progressed so went into last game against the unbeaten Guildford High School, knowing only a win would be good enough. Girls excelled themselves playing a fantastically high level of netball with great shooting, strong defense and excellent support in mid court. They played their best ever netball to win the game 9-7 and therefore end up top of the table and Regional U14 winners. Many congratulations to the girls!
