'Meet a Classicist' event

Last week the Latin department was delighted to welcome three alumni back to TGS for a "Meet a Classicist" Q&A event.

Katharine (2014), Anita (2017) and Charli (2017) returned with great enthusiasm to share their IB and university experiences with students from every year group who were curious to know more about studying Classics, Classical Civilisation, Ancient History and Archaeology at degree level.

Each of them shared details of their personal IB Diploma programme and how and why they chose their university course. It was fascinating to learn directly from recent graduates how the teaching styles, course content, assessments and learning environments varied. The students were very excited to hear how flexible classical courses can be, with opportunities to study a variety of ancient languages as well as philosophy, literature, archaeology and religion built in to every course.

Katharine and Charli were able to shed light on the Oxford and Cambridge admissions processes and offer plenty of reassurance about how stimulating and rewarding the application process was. Anita, who studied in the United States shared details of how the Liberal Arts curriculum works and that she was able to get credits towards her degree because she had scored high marks in the IB.

Their insight provided valuable real-world evidence of just how many career paths are open to Classics graduates. Whilst Charli is completing a masters next year, Anita and Katharine are both studying Law. Their coursemates are pursuing careers as varied as the creative arts and finance.

We hope to make this the first of many 'Meet a Classicist' events, with more alumni eager to visit next term.
