Around 280 students receive private music lessons at school. Tuition is provided by a team of highly qualified and experienced teachers in these areas:
- Piano (students must have their own piano)
- Violin, Viola , Cello and Double Bass
- Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone and Bassoon (the most popular instruments may have a waiting list)
- Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba
- Classical or Rock Guitar (students must have their own guitar)
- Percussion (Drum Kit with Orchestral Percussion)
- Music Theory
Applying for Tuition
If you would like music lessons from the Private Music Tuition Scheme at TGS for your daughter, you should apply using the online application form below opens on Monday 11 June 2018. You will be sent confirmation that tuition is available once a teacher has been allocated or to confirm that your name is on the waiting list.
Applications for music tuition will be available during the school year in the following enrolment windows:
- 11 June - 24 July 2018
- 14th- 28th October 2018
- 3rd - 17th February 2019
- 19th May - 2nd June 2019
Please note that there are likely to be waiting lists for some instruments, particularly voice and piano.
Charging for Lessons 2018-19
- Individual instrument or singing lessons: £175.00 per 10 X 30 min lessons
- Music Theory lessons: £123 per 10 X 20 min lesson
Lessons are paid for in blocks of 10. Payment is made directly to the music teacher and payable by the 2nd lesson per block. Teachers will invoice at the start of each block of lessons.
Notice periods FOR WITHDRAWAL
New students are expected to complete at least one full course of 10 lessons before considering withdrawal. If you wish to discontinue lessons, written notice must be given to the teacher and to Mr Hayward, Subject Leader Music before the following dates:
- 19 October 2018 for lessons to cease in December 2018
- 15 February 2019 to cease at the Easter break
- 24 May 2018 to cease in July 2018
Notice received after these cut off dates will result in a further course of 10 lessons, which are payable whether or not the student attends the further lessons, in lieu of adequate notice being given.
Private music lessons and Co-curricular musiC
Music activities are open to all students. There are groups for all abilities from orchestras to choirs and student-run clubs for all singers and instrumentalists. It is not a prerequisite to have instrumental lessons in school in order to take part, although we do expect those who receive private music tuition at school to support the music activities on offer.

Please Note: Hire instruments are for hire for the first academic year of tuition (September–July) and students should expect to return them in July making provision for their own instruments.

Musical Purchase Scheme for Instruments
Musical instruments can be purchased through the school. This can benefit the purchaser allowing students to buy instruments without having to pay United Kingdom VAT (20%). Please email via firstname.lastname@example.org for an application form.
