CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC

Music is a vital feature at all important school events: assemblies, Carol Services, Prize-giving, Open Evenings and at the School’s Music Showcase on Foundation Day in the Summer term.

There are major concerts each year before Christmas and in the Spring term. These feature the schools extensive co-curricular groups: Junior Choir for Year 7 singers, Cantores (Years 8 and 9) and Motet Choir for auditioned students in Years 10-13, TGS Orchestra, Chamber Ensemble, Swing Band, Ukulele Orchestra and other student-run groups. Concerts take place in local venues including St Stephen’s Church, Tonbridge and Tonbridge School Chapel. Two hundred performers regularly take part, including staff and parents.

Tea Concerts for students in Years 7–9 and Informal Concerts for Years 10-13 allow students to build performing skills in front of parents, friends and other supporters in the school’s new Recital Room. GCSE and IB musicians regularly take part in performances at local venues such as Tonbridge Parish church.

Motet Choir is an internationally renowned choir of over twenty years’ standing with an unrivalled reputation among state schools. Recent performances have included The International Choir Games in Magdeburg, Germany 2015, Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod 2016, Westminster Cathedral 2015 and we look forward to performing at The European Choir Games in Riga, Latvia in 2017.

TGS has a proud well-established link with the London Chamber Orchestra. The Music Junction project allows around twelve students each year to participate in workshops building a composition to be performed in May each year at London’s Cadogan Hall with the LCO. TGS students work with two other Kent schools, Skinner’s Kent Academy and Meadows Barnardo’s School Southborough as mentors for the less experienced musicians

Students can take Private Music Tuition as part of their studies at TGS. These are available for singing and all orchestral instruments, guitar and drums.

Associated Board Music Examinations take place twice annually, and TGS students can sign up to take an exam. Exams are also open to external candidates.

The Music department has recently undergone a complete transformation and its facilities are second to none. Sound-proof practice rooms sponsored by the PTA, Music Technology rooms, a Recital Room and a modern, fully-equipped studio make the department a fantastic environment in which to rehearse and perform.

Come and join in - there is a group for everyone!
