In Chemistry, concepts and ideas introduced in the lower school are extended and studied in more detail.

You learn more about how we obtain raw materials from the Earth, the extraction of metals, their properties and uses, and how to maintain their usefulness through the application of chemical understanding. You also investigate the chemicals used to make plastics, solvents and perfumes and learn about how these materials are produced industrially.

You continue to use experimental work extensively to support the theory you learn. You have the opportunity to carry out and write up full investigations to consolidate your knowledge and to support your understanding of scientific methodology. You also use formulas and balanced symbol equations to carry out a range of calculations and learn how to express your ideas and understanding clearly and logically using scientific terminology.
