Sixth Formers win places at the Liverpool CERN Particle School

Vidhisha and Connie in Year 13 explain more:

Over the summer we were fortunate enough to win places at the Liverpool CERN Particle School, through an essay competition.

Over the course of the week, we attended lectures by various renowned scientists from Liverpool University and CERN. We also took part in a Virtual Tour of the CERN facility in Geneva, where we saw the inner workings of the particle detectors such as ATLAS, as well as a tour of the control room at CERN.

We were also given the opportunity to take part in a coding workshop, during which we conducted data analysis with real data from the ATLAS experiment in search of the Higgs Boson, the most recently discovered particle.

The highlight of the week was doing a group presentation on an experiment that we had to design ourselves. Our experiment was about matter and antimatter symmetry and how it could possibly be explored through the behaviour of neutrinos.

We also got a glimpse of what the future holds for Physics, and how we could contribute to it.

Currently, in Physics lessons we are consolidating and building upon this knowledge on particle physics. We strongly encourage any aspiring physicists to take this opportunity as it will provide you with good foundational knowledge which you can add to at degree level.
