TGS is top of the class!

According to results published by The Department for Education, Tonbridge Grammar School came top of the 2011 GCSE league tables for the Kent local authority area, measured by average GCSE points score.

100% of students gained 5 A*-C GCSEs, with the average point score achieved placing the school above the other 7 Kent schools that  also achieved 100%. By both measures of point score (average across all grades and average across the best 8 grades) TGS topped the Kent list, and on the BBC website is 15th in the country.

In terms of expected progress in English and in Maths, TGS also topped the board, and the school performed strongly in the English Baccalaureate measure, which compares schools’ performance by the proportion of students gaining A*-C grades in Maths, English, Science, Languages and a Humanities subject. Despite not making entry for a Humanities subject compulsory, 92% of TGS students gained the EBac, placing the school 2nd in Kent and 28th in the country.

Particularly pleasing was the school’s performance by the “value added” measure. Girls entering the school do so with already high achievement; with a projection on outcome set at A*, the capacity to “add value” is severely limited. Schools with a much wider ability intake, where the potential to raise attainment is higher, took the first 9 places. TGS led the local selective schools, coming 10th overall.

Rosemary Joyce, Head Teacher, congratulated staff and students on their success, saying:

These results confirm that TGS provides the very best education for its students, who are a credit to the school. Our talented and dedicated staff team work extremely hard to ensure that every student is challenged to achieve their very best, and it shows. My thanks to all who have made these results our best yet!
